Special Focus: Postpartum Depression & Anxiety

Stacy writes, "I have a special interest in Postpartum issues.  I experienced Postpartum Depression myself following the birth of my second child 6 years ago.  I was irritable, angry and sad, and I had difficulty bonding with my baby.  My self esteem suffered when I could not be the mother I thought I should be to my 17 month old and to my newborn.  Fortunately, I had good social support and a wonderful husband.  It was through the compassionate care of both traditional and alternative therapists that I was able to heal from my depressive episode.  This experience left me with an even deeper appreciation of what depression can do to mothers, babies, children and families.  I want to be part of helping women to know that there is no shame in this illness; that they are not alone, and that healing is possible."

Postpartum Depression and Anxiety occur when women experience a disruption in their mood and daily functioning shortly after the birth of a child.  Hormonal fluctuations make the postpartum period an emotionally labile one for women, and most women experience the "baby blues" up to the first 2 weeks after birth.

If symptoms persist for more than 2 weeks and/or worsen over time, it may indicate a full blown episode of postpartum depression or anxiety.

A checklist for PPD such as the one found at www.postpartumstress.com/could_i_have_ppd is a good place to start in trying to assess oneself or a family member.

A better option would be a full asessment by a mental health professional such as Stacy Hoffer or Karen Persyn.  We can pinpoint exactly what the issues are and offer treatment options, including referral to a medical doctor specializing in postpartum issues, if appropriate.

If you are concerned about yourself or someone else, please do not hesitate to contact us.  The earlier the intervention, the better.  You may help to save a life.

The South Texas Birth and Women's Health Collaborative:

Inspired by the vision of Robyn Thompson, MSW, MPH, LMSW, several of us, including Stacy Hoffer, agreed to serve as founding board members.  The mission of STBWHC is to provide women with a full range of options for their birthing.  STBWHC plans to build the first ever hybrid birth center in the USA, which will combine the talents of both midwives and medical doctors and also provide medical backup in emergency situations.

To view a trailer of Ricki Lake and Abbey Epstein's fabulous film that explores the experience of birth in the USA, check out this website: www.thebusinessofbeingborn.com.  STBWHC was pleased to  host 2 screenings of the film at the Santikos Palladium at the Rim, on Thursday, January 24th, 2008 at 7 pm, and again on Tuesday, January 29th, 2008.

Currently the STBWHC is working on a resource guide for pregnant women and families.  If you have a business that serves these populations, you may want to take out an ad.  To learn more about the Collaborative and the Resource Guide, go to www.texasbirth.org.
